Red and orange poppies with small blue centres fill the lower two thirds of this portrait image, their petals loose and layered like washes of colour. Tall spikes of purple lupin rise between them, and flecks of cream and green break up the gold and ochre ground.
Above the flowers a flat, textured bluff in tan and brown runs across the middle, topped by a narrow band of pale cream sky fading into blue at the top edge. The surface looks scratchy and mottled, with spatters, rubbed patches and visible brush marks. It reads as an abstracted expressive painting of a wildflower field.
