Two orange California poppies stand in sharp focus against a meadow that has dissolved into soft colour. The upper bloom sits just right of centre on a thin green stem, its petals folded into a cup with a pink tinge at the base. The second poppy opens lower left, its ruffled petals glowing yellow-orange.
Around them, blurred pink and red poppies and deep blue cornflowers drift across the frame in streaks, as if the camera moved during the exposure. A single blue cornflower sits fairly crisp at lower right. Green grass fills the gaps. The look is a photograph with a dreamy, impressionist softness, and the warm orange against cool violet-blue gives it real depth.
