A single white sailboat sits on a wide, deep blue bay at the centre of the picture, with two smaller sails near the pale horizon. The water is laid in flat horizontal bands of cobalt and ultramarine, and the sky above is a lighter blue with thin cloud along the skyline.
In the foreground, a clifftop slope is crowded with red poppies, orange and gold shrubs and patches of purple flowers, set against white limestone rocks. Two slender trees with pale trunks and rust-orange leaves frame the view on the left and right, while a rocky headland rises across the bay. The thick, textured brushwork gives it a painterly look.
