A cluster of open poppies fills the frame, their petals in coral, vermilion and soft pink with dark black-purple centres. The edges of each bloom bleed into the next, so the flowers read as a loose crowd rather than separate studies. Fine speckles of pigment sit around the darkest centres.
Behind the blooms, a band of deep blue washes across the top, while greens and yellow-ochres pool through the stems and leaves below. Thin stems run down in pale lines, and small white gaps of bare paper let the colour breathe. The watercolour is wet, translucent and layered, with visible blooms and drips near the lower edge.
