About Princess
A young woman is shown from the waist up, turned slightly to her left with her eyes lowered and her hands crossed low in the frame. She wears a beaded headdress with a gold pendant band across the forehead, wide gold hoop earrings, and layered necklaces of red, white and gold discs. Her dark patterned garment is covered in fine spiral and grid motifs, worn under a loose cream wrap with broken white and red edges.
The background is a wash of cream, sand and pale blue, scored with looping pencil-like lines and a thick rust-red stroke down the right side. Paint is scraped back in places so lower layers show through, and the artist's red signature sits in the lower left. The character is quiet and inward: a still, dignified figure set against a deliberately unfinished, worked surface.
Suits an entry hall, a hallway end wall or a lounge room with warm neutral or lime-washed walls. The cream and ochre ground sits easily with rattan, timber and linen, while the rust-red stroke picks up terracotta pots or a kilim rug. Good beside carved timber pieces or other African figure work.
