A man in a cream straw cowboy hat leans against the back of a dappled grey horse, his head resting on his folded arms. The horse is saddled, with a coiled rope and leather straps hanging from the saddle in the left foreground. Its pale mane falls over its neck, and its head is lowered with one eye half closed.
The background is an open grassy plain, softened into a blur of straw yellow and olive green under a flat grey sky. Warm low light, likely sunrise or sunset, lands on the horse's speckled coat, the man's face and the tan leather. The shallow focus keeps attention on the pair. This is a photograph with a calm, quiet mood.
