About Random Shapes Number One
Overlapping rectangles and irregular slabs fill the canvas edge to edge. A tall off-white panel, flecked with grey and pale blue, runs down the left of centre and is crossed by a red bar angled slightly upward. Behind it sits a solid black mass shaped like a stepped wedge, the darkest note in the picture. Around these, scarlet, rust and ochre blocks are stacked in rough tiers, warmer orange gathering at the lower left and right. The paint is dry-brushed and scraped, so each block shows a mottled, crackled grain rather than flat colour. A small signature reads in white at the lower right.
The character is blunt and architectural: hot reds held in check by one cool white column and a block of black, with texture doing the work that detail would elsewhere.
Works in a lounge room or entry with white or pale grey walls, where the red carries across the room. Sits well above a low black or walnut sideboard, a charcoal sofa, or in a dining area with black-framed chairs. Pairs with linen, concrete and raw timber rather than busy patterns.
