About Red Planet Revisited
The canvas is split by colour rather than line: cool grey and pale blue fill the upper left, while a broad wash of orange-red runs down the right side and across the lower third. Near the top centre sits an oval disc ringed with a raised, rope-like border, its interior mottled with blue, green, red and white flecks like a small map. To its right, a rounded rectangle of thick ochre paint has been scratched into a mass of fine hatched marks.
Below, a row of six white concentric circles sits on the red field, above a dark horizontal band edged with pale dashes. Under that band the red is pulled downward in long runs and drips. On the left, clusters of thin vertical red and black lines cross short white horizontal strokes, forming a loose grid. The surface is heavily worked throughout, with trowelled ridges and crusted texture catching light. The painting reads as weathered wall or excavated surface, ordered but deliberately rough.
Works in a living room above a low grey or charcoal sofa, in an entry hall on a white wall, or in an office where a single strong red anchors the space. Pairs with concrete, raw timber, black steel shelving and linen upholstery. Keep surrounding decor quiet and let the texture carry the wall. Browse more the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings.
