A single rose bud is shown side-on against a plain white background, rendered in the see-through look of an x-ray. The petals appear as thin, overlapping layers of grey, and you can read the veins and folds of each one through the others. The darkest area sits at the base of the bloom, where the petals gather.
A thick stem rises from the bottom edge and meets the flower at a dark swelling below the bud. Outer petals flare out to the left and right as pale, almost glassy wisps. The image is entirely black, grey and white, with soft tonal gradients and plenty of clear white space around the flower. It reads as a photograph with a delicate, inverted feel.
