A rust-brown hen walks to the right across a square canvas, her body drawn in thick, layered strokes of chestnut, dark brown and umber. The tail is nearly black and the comb and wattle are bright red. A small amber eye and a pale yellow beak give the head a sharp, alert look.
The background is a muted grey collage of scratchy marks and scuffed texture. Faded lines of recipe text about chicken and mushrooms show through behind her, along with the words "COOKING" low on the left. Pale oval egg shapes sit in the corners. Her thin yellow-green legs and spread toes stand out against the grey. The look is a mixed-media illustration.
