A single African elephant faces the viewer head-on, filling the whole portrait frame. Its broad ears spread out to both edges, and the trunk hangs down the centre with fine horizontal creases drawn across it. Two long, pale tusks curve down on either side, the left one crossing slightly in front of the trunk near the bottom.
The surface looks heavily textured, with cracked, plaster-like patches across the grey skin and dark charcoal shadows inside the ears and behind the legs. Behind the animal, the background is a worn rust red and mustard orange that looks flaked and peeling. The cool grey body against the warm ochre sides gives a strong contrast, and a small square signature sits in the bottom right corner.
