Seen from high above, the top third of this portrait scene is a tan stretch of sand with a loose scatter of tiny figures, each trailing a long blue-brown shadow. Round umbrellas in cobalt, pink and orange sit among small boats and white and blue inflatables, drawn with quick, dry strokes.
Below the thin white line of surf, the water fills most of the frame in broad strokes of turquoise, sea green, pale yellow-green and sky blue. Small swimmers and bodyboarders lie on their boards, scattered across the water with tiny wakes. The brushwork is loose and visible, and the sand shows through as a warm paper-like ground.
