A single scallop shell stands upright on the left third of the frame, its ribbed fan facing the viewer. The ridges are white with rust-red and pink flecks, and the edge is slightly chipped and worn. The shell is sharp, while everything behind it softens into a smooth blur.
The wet sand acts like a mirror, holding a dark, soft reflection of the shell directly beneath it. Above, the sky and sand merge into bands of yellow, apricot and rose, with a darker pink streak near the top. Fine ripples and tiny bubbles dot the sand on the right. It is a close, shallow-focus photograph with warm sunrise light.
