Four large red poppies fill this square image, their ruffled petals rendered in loose, streaky brushwork that moves from deep crimson to bright orange-red. Dark purple-black centres ringed with fine stamens sit at the heart of three of the blooms, while a fourth is cropped at the lower left corner.
Behind them, a warm cream background with a mottled, plaster-like texture carries lines of black cursive handwriting in French, with fragments such as "et" and "bonjour" visible. The thin olive stems curve up from the bottom edge, and the strong red against the soft neutral gives the piece a lively, graphic feel.
