A two-masted schooner leans into the wind at the centre of the scene, its white sails full and slightly translucent where the light passes through. A small red and white flag flies from the stern. The dark hull cuts through the water and throws up a bright white bow wave.
The sea is a deep blue, broken by short whitecaps that run across the foreground in loose, textured strokes. Above the horizon the sky glows peach, pink and gold, with lilac and slate clouds drifting across it. A low headland sits at the right edge and a faint hill on the left. The look is a realistic marine painting.
