A close crop of a ship's helm wheel fills the left and centre of this square sepia photograph. Turned wooden spokes run out from a worn brass hub with a nut at its centre, and a rim handle with a dark rounded tip pokes out on the right. The wheel is tilted, so the circle reads as a strong diagonal.
Behind the wheel sits a brass binnacle with a glass-fronted compass housing on top. Hard sunlight throws shadow patterns across its curved body and onto the deck, leaving bright patches and deep brown darks. The single warm brown tone shows scuffed brass, grain in the timber and the age of the fittings.
