A single open poppy seen from above fills the centre of the portrait frame, shown as a photographic negative. The petals read as dark brown, overlapping shapes with soft folds, while a pale cream disc sits at the heart, ringed by fine radiating stamens tipped with tiny specks.
The whole image is toned in sepia, from deep chocolate to cream. The background looks like an aged plate, with scratches, stains, mottled patches and worn edges across the surface. A pale stem runs off to the left, and the light, uneven texture gives the flower a faded, archival feel.
