About Merriment
Short, flat strokes of thick paint cross each other in the centre of the canvas to form a loose woven block, with horizontal bands running in from the left and right edges and vertical bars dropping through the middle. The palette is bright and mostly pastel: sky blue, mint and aqua green, buttery yellow, lilac and peach, sharpened by bursts of hot magenta and a deeper violet at the lower right. Orange flecks sit near the top and centre right.
Paint is dragged rather than brushed, so each stroke has ragged, spatula-cut ends and ridges that catch the light. Wide margins of bare white canvas surround the block on all four sides, and a small signature sits in the lower right corner. The character is light and cheerful, busy in the middle but calm at the edges.
Suits a light-filled living room, a hallway with white or pale grey walls, a child's or teenager's bedroom, or a reception area that needs colour without a fixed subject. Pairs with pale timber, white joinery, linen sofas and simple black or white frames. The white border means it works well above a low sideboard.
