Rows of heavy concrete pilings march away from the viewer beneath a pier, each pair of beams shrinking toward a small bright opening at the far end. The perspective is dead centre and symmetrical, which pulls the eye straight down the tunnel. The nearest pillar on the left carries a patch of faded graffiti and weathered stains.
The sea has been softened by a long exposure into smooth, milky water that blurs into the pale horizon. Soft reflections of the pilings stretch across the surface in the foreground. The sky is an even overcast grey. This is a black and white photograph with a narrow range of silvery greys and no strong contrast.
