A line of wooden sailing warships fills the middle of the picture, their sails billowing in cream and grey. The largest ship sits right of centre with its hull side facing us, rows of gun ports showing along the brown timbers. Smaller ships recede to the left and right, and white puffs of gunsmoke rise between the hulls.
In the foreground the sea is rough and dark, in teal, slate blue and green, with whitecaps breaking across the swell. Broken timbers and wrecked boats float at the lower left and right, with tiny figures clinging to the debris and a small rowboat crossing the middle. A pale grey and blue sky blends into the smoke above, in the soft tones of a traditional marine painting.
