A male cardinal sits side-on to the viewer on a thick, golden-brown branch, its head turned slightly left. The body is built from layered washes of red and orange, with darker crimson along the wing and tail. A black mask surrounds the short orange beak, and the pointed crest rises at the top of the head.
White flecks of snow scatter across the whole surface, with small drifts resting on the branch. The background is a loose mix of deep green, teal and blue, crossed by fine pale twigs. A patch of yellow-green glows at lower left. The watercolour pooling and soft bleeding edges are clearly visible, and a small blue touch shows on the wing.
