About Solar Pony I
A single horse stands in profile across a square field of rust red and burnt orange. Its body is rendered in cool charcoal grey and blue-green tones, with one foreleg lifted and bent at the knee, head turned slightly toward the viewer and ears pricked forward. The tail falls in loose dark strokes near the lower left. Behind the horse the ground lightens to pale apricot and cream, while the upper corners deepen to a near-black red, giving the figure a lit-from-behind look.
The surface reads as weathered and layered, with mottled patches, faint speckles and dry streaks that look like aged plaster or a scuffed wall. Edges of the horse are soft and partly dissolved into the background, so the animal seems to emerge from the colour rather than sit on top of it. The mood is quiet and monumental, more like a fragment of an old fresco than a portrait of a particular horse.
Works above a sideboard or bed in a room with warm timber, leather or rattan, and sits comfortably in a living room, home office or beach house hallway. The rust and ochre tones suit terracotta tiles, linen in oatmeal or clay, and brass fittings. Hang the larger square sizes on a plain white or charcoal wall so the burnt colours carry.
