Eight small songbirds sit along a tangle of dark branches that cross a square, cream and pale grey ground. The birds are loosely brushed in slate blue, teal, indigo and soft grey, with a single brown bird at the centre looking sideways. Some face left and some right, so the eye moves across the whole picture.
Between the birds, muted taupe leaves and a few faint flower shapes drift over the background, almost like shadows. The branches run in navy, charcoal and brown, with thin streaks of dry, scratchy brushwork over the top. The surface looks layered and textured, in an impressionist style with a calm, cool palette.
