About Amber Tulips Still Life
A square canvas split into flat blocks of colour, as if a table corner and wall have been folded into geometry. The lower left panel is pale sand-yellow and holds three tulip heads on thin dark stems, painted in short overlapping strokes of orange, red and lemon yellow, with one bloom left pale and unfinished at the right. The right panel is deep brick red and carries a tall gold and white vase holding a single flat orange flower. Above, a violet-grey wedge meets a soft grey field crossed by fine drawn lines.
The mood is warm and constructed rather than delicate, with heavy knife-laid paint giving the tulips real ridges and grit.
Works in a dining room above a sideboard, in a kitchen nook, or on a hallway wall where the reds pick up timber furniture and terracotta. Pairs with linen, brass lamps and warm white walls. The square shape suits a chimney breast or a single wall between two doorways. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
