About Winter Tulips in Red
Six closed tulip heads rise across a square canvas, painted in crimson and deeper carmine with cream and pale pink highlights dragged along each petal. The largest bloom sits just off centre, flanked by two smaller buds at left and one at right, with two more set higher near the top edge. Stems and calyx leaves are drawn in dark charcoal and slate grey, applied thickly so they stand above the surface. The background is a soft, scrubbed grey-white worked with a broad brush.
Below the flowers, thin washes of brown and black run downward in streaks and speckles, like paint allowed to bleed and dry on the wall. The mood is quiet and slightly weathered rather than bright and decorative, with the red heads doing all the work against a muted ground.
Suits a hallway, bedroom or dining room with grey, white or greige walls, and works well above a sideboard or bedhead. The crimson lifts rooms built on linen, charcoal and timber. Pair it with black metal lamps, pale oak furniture and simple ceramics, or hang it alone on a wide plaster wall. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
