About Pewter Poppies in Vase
Three open poppies fill the centre of a square canvas, their petals painted in silver grey and white with dark shading pressed into each fold. Two closed buds rise on slim stems, one top left and one to the right, their surfaces ridged with the same grey-white strokes. Each open bloom holds a small crowded centre of orange, yellow and red dabs. The stems gather into a pale, loosely drawn glass vase at the lower edge. Behind them the ground shifts from warm bronze light on the left to deep smoky brown at the corners.
The overall feel is quiet and metallic, with the petals reading almost like beaten pewter. Thick paint sits raised on the petal edges, so the flowers catch real light across the surface.
Works above a sideboard or hall table in a room with warm timber, brass or bronze finishes. The brown-to-gold background suits neutral, taupe or charcoal walls and sits well with leather and linen. In a dining room or bedroom, hang it on its own at eye level, or pair it with a small lamp and ceramics in cream and amber. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
