About Silver Fern with Golden Vine
A single large fern-shaped leaf sits slightly left of centre on a square canvas, its tip reaching the upper edge and its stem curling into a small hook near the bottom. The leaf is built up in relief, with a raised outline and a sharply ridged central rib that divides the pointed lobes. Silver and warm gold pigments sit over each other so the surface shifts between pewter and bronze. Behind it the ground is a soft mauve-grey, brushed smooth and left almost flat, with a warm glow near the top corners.
Down the right-hand side runs a vertical band of chocolate brown, separated from the grey by a hard edge. Across it a slim gold vine winds upward, piped in thick raised line work with small five-petal flowers and tight spirals. The piece is quiet and decorative, more surface and shine than scenery, with the texture doing most of the work.
Works in an entry hall, a bedroom above a low chest of drawers, or a bathroom wall where the metallics pick up light. It suits warm neutral rooms with taupe, chocolate or greige walls, and pairs with timber furniture, brass lamps, linen bedding and indoor greenery such as a monstera or fern.
