About Terracotta Warriors' Watch
A single terracotta warrior fills the right side of the canvas, turned three-quarters to the left, his topknot bound above a broad brow and his moustached face lit along one cheek. His armour is built up in ochre, bone and pale grey, with the plates suggested rather than drawn in detail. Behind him three smaller figures recede into shadow, one child-sized in the middle distance, their edges dissolving into the grey. The upper wall carries a slab of scraped red pigment and a column of Chinese characters running down the left edge.
The background is treated like a weathered wall: dragged greys, chalky whites and a rust-brown panel at the right, with paint scratched back and dripped so the surface reads as aged plaster. Texture is heaviest in the armour and the red patch, thin and washy in the shadows. The overall character is quiet and archaeological, more mood and surface than illustration, with the warrior's steady gaze holding the composition together.
Suits a hallway, dining room or study with plaster, concrete or charcoal walls. The greys and rust tones sit well with dark timber furniture, leather seating, woven rugs and ceramic or stone objects. Hang it as a single square above a sideboard or console, or opposite a window where side light picks up the scraped texture. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
