About Amber Scrolls and Gold Leaf
A square canvas divided by a vertical band of pale grey that runs top to bottom, with thinner grey lines framing the right-hand field like a window. The left strip is a cream and brown column stamped with rough dark rings, scratched back so the under-layers show through. The larger right panel glows amber and rust, with black scrollwork curling up the centre in fine tendrils, leaves and spirals. Two squares of gold leaf sit off-centre, one upper right, one lower left, their edges torn and uneven.
The paint is worked in thin, scraped layers with visible grain and trowel marks, so the amber ground looks aged rather than flat. It reads as a calm, ornamental piece where the black line work does the drawing and the gold squares provide the only bright accents.
Suits warm interiors with timber, leather or rattan: above a sideboard in a dining room, in a hallway, or over a bed with linen in cream and caramel. The gold leaf picks up lamplight, so it works well in a lounge with brass or bronze fittings and a dark timber floor. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
