A small white lighthouse with a red top stands on the far end of a stone pier, while a huge wave bursts over the pier wall in the foreground. Spray streaks across the frame and drifts up into the sky, so the wall looks half dissolved in white water.
The light is flat and heavy. A grey-brown sky sits over a dark horizon, and the sea is cold slate, blue and mauve in the shadows. The foam is sharp and textured, which makes this a photograph with real force, and the tiny lighthouse gives the scene its scale.
