A single tulip leans left across a square canvas, its cream petals flamed with raspberry-red streaks that run from the tips toward the centre. The edges curl and ruffle slightly, and the bloom tilts as though the weight of the head is bending the stem. One long green stem curves upward from the bottom centre.
The left fifth of the picture is a panel of pale cream damask scrollwork on a darker beige ground, with swirling acanthus-style curls. The rest of the background is a soft, mottled parchment tone. Two broad olive-green leaves sweep out on either side of the stem. The soft shading gives it an aged, decorative feel.
