About Sweet Pea

A giraffe leans in from the right of the frame, head tilted slightly, its long neck running down to the bottom edge. The whole animal is built from loose watercolour washes in violet, plum and magenta, cooled by patches of pale grey-blue across the ears, the bridge of the nose and the shoulder. Two short ossicones sit on top of the head in deep wine red, with a line of darker strokes suggesting the mane. Irregular plum blotches along the neck stand in for the giraffe's patches.

The background is left largely white, with a blush of pink and lilac washing outwards behind the ears and cheek where the pigment has bled into damp paper. Edges are soft and unfinished, so the animal seems to dissolve into the page, while the eyes and nostrils are picked out in darker, wetter pools of colour. The character is gentle and a little wistful, with the giraffe looking directly and calmly at the viewer.
