A single butterfly sits at the centre of a portrait panel, wings spread flat and seen from above, like a specimen plate. The forewings are dark teal with a broad pale band running along their edges and a row of small spots near the body. The lower wings are pale and almost white, with a few dark dots and fine veins.
The whole image is a monochrome teal. The background is dark and mottled, with scratches, cracks and stains that give it the look of aged paper. A thin dashed white border runs around the edge. Below the butterfly is a handwritten-style caption in pale script: "fig. v: Siproeta stelenes". The effect is of an inverted, negative-style print.
