A tall heron with deep teal and blue plumage stands in profile on a muddy, mossy bank, its long neck curved back so the yellow-orange bill reaches down toward its chest. A white crest and fine plumes trail from the head and back, and the thin yellow legs end in long splayed toes gripping a fallen log.
Behind the bird, a still lagoon runs back past clusters of tall palms and dense green scrub in soft, hazy yellow light. At right, a large broad-leaved plant with glossy green foliage rises beside the heron. The style is a detailed natural history illustration with fine linework, muted greens and a pale cream sky. A caption beneath reads "Louisiana Heron" and a printed cream border surrounds the scene.
