About The Calm
The horizon sits just above the centre, splitting a pale aqua sky from a wide sheet of open water. The sky is thinly washed, with soft white cloud drifting across the upper left and a clear band of light blue at the top. Below, the sea is built from long horizontal strokes in teal, aqua, deep blue-green and olive, broken by a vertical column of silver-white light running from the horizon to the lower edge. Six small dark birds fly in loose formation over the right side.
The paint is applied in thin, wet-looking layers with soft, blurred edges, so the water reads as calm swell rather than breaking waves. Its character is quiet and open, with almost nothing to fix the eye except the light on the water and the small birds.
Works above a bed, a long sofa or a bath, and suits coastal and Hamptons rooms as well as plain white contemporary interiors. It sits well with linen upholstery, pale oak, rattan and brushed nickel.
