About The Chinese Lady II
A woman is shown from behind on the left of the composition, her head turned slightly away, dark hair gathered and pinned up at the nape. Her bare back and shoulders are rendered in warm tan tones, with a pale blue-grey wrap slipping down around her upper arms. Behind her the surface breaks into a grid of rectangles and one large circle, layered in denim blue, slate, mauve and sandy brown, with faint Chinese characters and script marks showing through the washes.
Small squares of gold leaf sit at intervals across the right side, catching against the cooler panels and the silver-grey framed shapes. The overall character is quiet and contemplative: a calm figure anchoring a busy, textured field of stacked panels and worn, weathered surfaces.
Suits bedrooms, dressing rooms and quiet lounge walls where blue and grey tones already appear. It works above a bedhead or a low sideboard, and sits well with linen bedding, pale timber furniture, woven baskets and brushed nickel or brass lamps. The gold accents pick up warm metallic fittings.
