About The East
A Buddha is shown from the chest up, centred and facing forward with the eyes lowered and almost closed. The hair is built from rows of small gold and amber spheres that catch thick highlights, rising to a domed ushnisha. The face is painted in cream and pale grey with soft shading down the nose and along the jaw, the long earlobes lit white at the edges. Across the shoulder falls a robe in ochre, rust and olive, brushed in vertical strokes with one narrow turquoise line at the lower right.
Behind the figure is a tall black panel, flanked by mottled bands of pale grey and brown that look like cracked plaster or weathered stone. The paint there is scraped and dragged, leaving fissures and chips of lighter ground showing through. The effect is calm and still: a quiet meditative face held against a dark, worn wall, with the gold of the hair and robe doing all the work of light.
Suits a bedroom, hallway or meditation and yoga space, and works well above a low timber console or at the end of a narrow corridor. The black background sits comfortably against white, stone grey or clay-coloured walls, and pairs with rattan, linen, brass candleholders and indoor greenery.
