About The Follower
Two tall, stylised female figures stand side by side, seen from behind and slightly in profile. Their bodies are drawn as long tapering columns in orange and red, with smooth shading that lifts the hips and shoulders into soft highlights. Each wears a flame-shaped head wrap that rises in two points above a dark brown neck and cheek, and a turquoise band curves across the shoulder like a collar. The figure on the right carries a spray of bright green leaves tucked behind her arm.
The background is a mottled wash of yellow at the top that warms into ochre and deep orange behind their legs, dabbed and scumbled so the canvas weave shows through. There is no ground line, no faces and no detail beyond the leaves, which keeps attention on the silhouettes. Brushwork is flat and blended on the bodies, rougher and more broken in the backdrop. The character is quiet and decorative: warm, upright and simplified almost to pattern.
The heat in this painting works against white, cream or grey walls, and suits a hallway, dining room or bedroom where a tall vertical shape fits between doors or beside a wardrobe.
