A large golden-orange rooster fills the left half of the picture, his feathers loose and fluffy, with a red comb and wattle and a small dark eye turned to the side. His pink legs and feet reach the bottom edge, with a soft shadow beneath. The wet washes of amber, orange and rust run into each other.
Behind him on the right stands a grey and white speckled hen with a red comb, her feathers dotted with black splashes. In the lower right a smaller brown hen tucks in low, her yellow beak pointed left. Behind all three is a wall of blue and lilac tiles with pale grid lines. The loose watercolour style leaves paper white and drips visible.
