A black and white photograph of the Manhattan Bridge seen from the river. A steel tower with a lattice of crossed braces and an open arch rises on the right, topped with small ornamental finials. Suspension cables fall in long diagonals from the tower to the deck, and the truss along the roadway is picked out in pale zigzags.
In the lower left, a tugboat with a white wheelhouse and a dark hull cuts across the water, leaving a thin line of wake. Behind the bridge piers sit apartment blocks, and the Empire State Building stands faint on the right against a flat white sky. The grey water and soft light give the frame a quiet, even tone.
