A tall, dark sea stack rises from calm water just right of centre, with a smaller spur on its left and an arch of open space at its base. Behind it the horizon glows orange and yellow, fading upward into heavy purple and indigo cloud. A low green headland sits on the left edge and faint blue mountains line the far right.
The foreground is a black sand and pebble beach, scattered with rounded rust-brown and cream stones. Thin films of water between them reflect the blue and violet of the sky, and the stones facing the light pick up warm orange highlights. The long exposure smooths the sea into a soft, glassy surface. It is a photograph, sharp from the nearest rocks to the distant shore.
