This portrait photograph looks straight down the underside of a pier. Rows of weathered concrete pylons stand on both sides, and flat beams cross overhead in a series of shrinking bands. The repeated shapes pull the eye along a tunnel toward a small patch of pale sky at the far end.
Between the pylons the sea rolls in as teal and deep green water, topped with white foam. A spray of water leaps up near the pylons in the distance. The concrete is stained in rust brown and grey, and the colours are muted and cool, with the bright opening at the end as the lightest point.
