About The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889, from a window of the asylum at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had admitted himself the previous month. The view faced east, and he worked from memory and imagination as much as observation — the village below, with its steepled church, is a Dutch invention rather than a Provençal one.
What makes the painting extraordinary is its movement. Eleven stars and a swollen crescent moon burn through a sky that rolls in thick, spiralling currents, laid down in impasto strokes heavy enough to cast their own shadows. Against them a cypress rises like dark flame — a tree van Gogh associated with death, here linking earth to sky. Below, the village sleeps in cool blues, utterly still.
Van Gogh himself considered it a failure, and mentioned it only briefly to his brother Theo. He painted it at thirty-six, roughly a year before his death. It has hung in the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941 and is among the most recognised paintings in the world.

Partly. The hills and the sky follow the view east from his window before sunrise. The village below, with its steep-roofed houses and church spire, is invented — Dutch in character rather than Provençal — and the cypress in the foreground is enlarged well beyond life.
