A small grey fox stands in the left half of the frame, body angled towards the viewer and head turned to look off to the left. Its coat is grey over the back and flanks, with rust orange across the neck and chest, and white markings beside the muzzle. The ears are upright and dark-rimmed, and the dark eyes are sharp and wary.
The fox is set against dry, bleached grass that fades into a soft blur, so the animal is the only crisp point in the scene. Tones stay muted: straw yellow, pale brown and silvery grey, with the fox's orange fur as the one warm note. Damp, darker fur on the legs shows fine detail in this close wildlife photograph.
