A white water lily with spiky, pointed petals stands on a tall yellow-green stem at right of centre. To its left are two closed buds, one a soft violet and one a deep indigo, both rising from dark water. The three blooms sit at different heights and give the scene a loose diagonal.
The pond is built from short, thick dabs of oil-style paint. Pale blue-green lily pads float over deep cobalt and near-black water, while the upper half glows with lemon yellow, olive green and flecks of orange-red. The heavy, ridged texture makes the surface look like it is shimmering in broken light.
