A single scallop shell sits at the centre of a square frame, its ribbed fan filling most of the picture. Dark brown bands cross the ridges in neat arcs, with pale cream patches between them. The ribs narrow to a point at the hinge at the bottom, where the shell turns a softer tan.
The background looks like an aged plaster wall in cream, pale grey and faint blue. Fine cracks run across it, flakes of paint have chipped away in grey and brown spots, and thin rusty drip lines run down the surface. A faint starfish is visible at the top right, and the sepia colouring gives the whole image a worn, old-photograph feel.
