About Winter Couple
Two red-crowned cranes stand close together in the centre of a portrait composition, their long necks angled upward so the tips of their grey beaks almost touch above them. Each bird carries the scarlet crown patch and black-and-white neck markings of the species, with loose black plumes trailing over the tail and slender grey legs planted in shallow snow. Snowflakes fall across the whole frame as small white dots, heaviest through the upper half.
Behind the pair, faint blue-grey rock forms and a cloudy sky dissolve into mist, while the foreground melts into an almost blank field of white. The mood is quiet and cold, with the two birds reading as a single pale shape against soft grey weather.
