About Sunrise at SS Ayrfield
The wreck of a steel ship sits low in flat water on the left of the canvas, its bow angled towards the viewer and its hull eaten through with rust in bands of brown, orange and grey. A thicket of mangroves has taken root along the deck and spills over the sides in rounded olive and sage green masses. A second clump of mangroves closes the right edge. Behind them, a pale apartment skyline and a low tower sit on the far shore under an apricot and cream sunrise sky.
The water is glassy and holds an almost complete mirror image of hull, trees and sky, with the reflection softened into long vertical smears. Brushwork is fine and controlled in the rusted plating, looser and more broken in the foliage. The mood is quiet and still, a piece of industrial wreckage slowly turned back into a garden.
Suits a living room with timber floors and linen upholstery, a bedroom where the warm apricot sky settles the room, or a home office above a desk. The rust and olive tones sit well with leather, brass lamps and indoor greenery, and the wide format fits a sofa wall or a long hallway.
