Two racing yachts dominate the scene, their huge cream sails filling the left and centre of the frame. The nearer yacht leans into the wind, its white hull just visible at the waterline, while a second yacht sits close behind with sails set at a similar angle. Fine seam lines run across the sails.
The sea is a choppy mix of jade and olive green with pale foam crests, and a single seagull skims low over the water in the foreground. On the right a red-hulled steamer flying small flags sits among other distant vessels. Soft teal and grey clouds fill the sky in a faded lithograph style.
