A single zebra is shown from the side, its head turned to the right and its neck curving down and away to the left. The stripes are broad black washes that run off the left edge of the picture, with the mane along the top ending in ragged, feathered tips where the pigment has pooled and dried.
The face is built from narrower stripes that tighten around the dark eye and the muzzle. Warm brown and tan tones sit in the inner ear and across the nose, giving the black and white a golden edge. The watercolour looks soft and wet, and the paper-white background is left almost empty below the neck.
